Hanukkah means “consecration, dedication”. This feast, which is celebrated during 8 days starting from the 25th of the month of Kislew, in the last days of autumn, commemorates the victory of the Maccabeans against the Antioco Epifanes in the year 165 BC. Tradition informs us that as soon as the Temple was purified when the eternal light was being kindled, people realised that they only had pitcher of oil that was ritually purified. That oil would only last for 1 day but due to a miracle the lamp was able to shine for eight days, and that is why Hanukkah is celebrated as the Feast of Light.
